Medical Weight Loss and You

Patients with a body mass index (BMI) over 30 are at a higher risk of developing medical health conditions such as hypertension, heart disease, cancer, and sleep apnea. Despite this increased risk, the struggle to lose weight and keep it off can be a long and frustrating experience for many individuals.

Fortunately, Tijuana Bariatric Center provides bariatric surgery and nutrition counseling to promote lasting medical weight loss. We understand that choosing a bariatric surgeon is an important decision and can provide all the information you need to move forward.

During a medical weight loss program, our physicians will help guide you through the various steps of treatment, assisting in the management of diet, fitness, and other healthy lifestyle behaviors. By combining surgical and non-surgical practices, the two options can work hand-in-hand to deliver the most transformative, long-lasting changes.

My experience was amazing! It starts from the very beginning. Before you even get to Tijuana! The staff walks you through everything you need to know and do. They stay in constant contact via email or phone calls. Once you are in beautiful Tijuana, you are so very well taken care of by the hosting hotel and your driver. The hospital is so clean and serene. The doctors and nurses are amazing! I really didn't want to leave! It was so beautiful! The surgery went very well and of course I've lost 70 lbs now, but the experience as a whole was amazing, and I'm so glad I did it!

Bariatric Surgery Options in Tijuana

  • Gastric Sleeve Surgery – Gastric sleeve, also known as sleeve gastrectomy, is among the most popular fat loss solutions. It is a restrictive procedure that removes up to 85 percent of the stomach. Bariatric surgeons reshape the organ into a long sleeve rather than a small pouch to limit the amount of food you can eat. As a result, patients experience reduced hunger and often lose half their body weight in as little as six months. Because gastric sleeve surgery doesn't alter the small intestine, it doesn't affect how your body absorbs food, so you're not as likely to suffer nutritional deficiencies.
  • Single Incision Laparoscopic Sleeve – This minimally invasive state-of-the-art gastric sleeve technique is ideal for patients at or below 39 body mass index (BMI). Instead of creating four to five small openings, a bariatric surgeon performs this WLS surgery option through a single incision near the belly button. The surgeon removes a substantial portion of the stomach to make you feel full faster and promote weight loss. As this procedure is less invasive, you'll have a shorter recovery, less discomfort, and a reduced risk of complications.
  • Gastric Bypass Surgery – Roux-en-Y gastric bypass is considered by many doctors and patients alike to be a superior weight loss surgery option. During surgery, your bariatric surgeon will divide the stomach, creating a small pouch that reduces stomach capacity. The procedure also reroutes the digestive tract, so your body absorbs fewer calories from the food you eat. The Roux-en-Y gastric bypass procedure offers long-term results that are dramatic in terms of weight loss and mitigation of comorbid disease.
  • Mini Gastric Bypass Surgery – This modified version of the traditional gastric bypass procedure offers comparable results via a simpler and safer surgery. Because less of the digestive system is re-routed, the chance of complications is substantially reduced. Patients often lose as much as 80 percent of their original weight.
  • Revision Bariatric Surgery – While bariatric surgery has a high rate of success, sometimes patients are not satisfied with the effects of their procedure. Weight loss may begin to decline or plateau. A patient may even begin to regain weight. Occasionally, medical complications can arise. In such situations, Dr. Garcia can perform bariatric revision surgery to improve your weight loss journey at our state-of-the-art surgery center in Tijuana, Mexico.
  • Duodenal Switch Surgery – Many experts consider Duodenal Switch Surgery the most effective weight loss surgery, as it is generally recommended for morbidly obese patients. People tend to lose the most excess weight through this option. Duodenal Switch Surgery combines restrictive and malabsorptive techniques to aid in weight loss. The surgeon removes a part of the stomach and rearranges the digestive tract to separate the flow of food from digestive juices. Less of the digestive tract is involved in this procedure than in gastric bypass.
  • Gastric Sleeve Plication Surgery – This technique restricts the stomach's capacity by creating an internal fold, or a small pouch. Because this weight loss surgery preserves healthy tissue and does not require intestinal rerouting, your ability to absorb nutrients is unchanged. Your skilled bariatric surgeon at Tijuana Bariatric Center will use biocompatible sutures to lessen the chance of rejection or infection. The risk of complications is very low, and results can be revised into other gastric surgery types or even reversed.

After the Surgery

Bariatric surgery is an aid to weight loss, not a cure. Many of the procedures available through Tijuana Bariatric Center require patients to follow strict dietary recommendations as well as vitamin and mineral supplementation. Failure to do so could lead to severe dietary deficiencies resulting in other health problems.

Patients should be committed to making healthy lifestyle changes, including strictly following the recommended diet and getting sufficient exercise. Surgery and diet alone will not be sufficient for patients to keep off the weight.

Live a Longer and Healthier Life

Morbid obesity and excessive weight can make it extremely difficult to participate in physical activities and comfortably complete everyday tasks. An inability to lose excess weight can result in mental anguish and frustration, and more concerningly, serious medical conditions.

For many patients seeking medical weight loss through bariatric surgery, the cost of the procedure is often prohibitive, leaving them with few options. At Tijuana Bariatric Center in Mexico, we can help patients achieve amazing results with affordable bariatric surgery procedures.
