What Is Laparoscopic Surgery?

Also known as keyhole surgery, laparoscopic surgery refers to a state-of-the-art method to perform surgical procedures in a far less invasive way than traditional open surgery. In all types of laparoscopic surgery, the cuts used to access the surgery site are much smaller than those used in open surgery where more of the surgical site is exposed.

For bariatric surgery, your doctor works through a series of small incisions typically ranging between 0.5 cm and 1.5 cm in size. Open surgery involves a large incision that exposes the organs. With laparoscopic surgery, there is no need to expose the organs.

How Laparoscopic Surgery Is Performed

The key part of this procedure is an instrument called a laparoscope. This slender tool has a tiny fiber optic camera and a light at the end that allows bariatric surgeons to get a view of the stomach, the small intestines, and other organs of the body through one of the small incisions. Small surgical instruments are inserted through the other small incisions so that the precision work of a bariatric procedure can be accomplished without the need for a large incision.

Laparoscopic Surgery Reduces Blood Loss

Since laparoscopic surgery only involves the use of small incisions, much less bleeding occurs during the surgical procedure. This is better for the patient as it helps reduce risk of complications during a procedure that otherwise may require blood transfusions.

Laparoscopic Surgery Results In Faster Healing and Better Recovery

Since the incisions are small, patients generally experience less trauma from this procedure. You’ll undergo a faster and safer recovery process. Traditional open surgery often requires a hospital stay of up to a week, along with a recovery period of two to three weeks. Laparoscopic surgery also results in less post-operative pain compared to open surgery, and patients tend to be back on their feet sooner.

It Is Safer with Regard to Infection Risk

With open surgery, the potential for infection can be high because of the exposure of the internal organs during a procedure. Thanks to laparoscopic techniques, there is reduced risk of infections after surgery since the internal organs are not exposed during an operation.

It Means Smaller Scars

A large scar from open surgery can be unsightly, especially when it involves the abdomen. With laparoscopic surgery, the scarring is much smaller, so it won’t be as noticeable. Your tiny scars will fade with time giving you an overall better aesthetic result following bariatric surgery.

It Is Ideal

As you can see, laparoscopic surgery is a great option to consider for bariatric procedures. Not all patients are candidates, however, which is why you need a thorough evaluation. Patients should exceed their ideal body weight by approximately 30%. Additionally, candidate should understand the full importance of the procedure, including risks and complications.
